The penultimate round of the French Elite Motocross championship was a great one for team Rockstar Bud Racing Kawasaki, who dominated both classes. Winner of the MX2 classification Dylan Ferrandis is strongly leading the ‘Internationaux de France’ while Greg Aranda claimed his first double win this season in the MX1 class.

Nobody was able to ride with the Bud riders this weekend, as Dylan and Greg didn’t let anything to their rivals. Best lap time during the practice session, holeshot and all the heat wins were for Greg and Dylan in Saint Jean d’Angely!

Fastest rider in the timed practice period, Dylan Ferrandis had a quiet MX2 race. He grabbed the holeshot and then controls Benoit Paturel, taking even more advantage when they joined the lapped riders to win the heat twenty seconds ahead his rival. Very confident before the super final he had some strong moves after the start to come in fourth place; he passed Paturel for third, and then reduced the gap with Fabien Izoird on a 450. He passed him after mid race to finish runner up behind Aranda and best MX2 rider.

Back to his best form and pole position in the MX1 class, Gregory Aranda had dreaming starts in both races, MX1 heat and super final. Leading the race in the first corner Greg posted some fast laps to secure his leadership; in the MX1 race Soubeyras who was second crashed, so Greg could save some energy for the super final; once more leader in the first corner he had no opposition in this race and scored his first double win this season. A great reward after his injuries earlier this season, and an encouraging performance for the coming Euro Supercross season.

Dylan Ferrandis: “My goal this weekend was to get a top 3 and score as many points as possible and after my MX2 win I had a great super final. I was next to Aranda on the grid and I came fourth in the first corner, but there was some confusion in the first uphill and I lost some positions. I came back second behind Greg, that’s a great result on the track against the 450. I keep the red plate and now the goal is to have it after the last round in three weeks, in Gaillac. It’s great for the mental to score such good results after my disappointment in second moto in Portugal, it’s a boost for the World Championship and I hope that we’ll have good racing conditions in Brazil next week-end.”

Gregory Aranda: “ It’s a perfect day for me with the pole position, two holeshot and two heat wins. I think that I’m back to the level I had last year, and I will continue to train and work to get even more. I didn’t take any risks today, for sure when you get two holeshot it’s easier; in the first race I had some arm pump, and in the second one I didn’t want to crash as I wanted to win both heats. It’s great to win after such a difficult period; I didn’t know what to expect after the last injury, and I had to work hard to be back; two weeks after my injury I had only one goal, to be back on my bike and I want to thank team Rockstar Bud Kawasaki and my mechanic for their support.”

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 rider Clement Desalle took a historic victory aboard the Factory RM-Z450 in the opening round of the 2013 FIM World Motocross Championship under the floodlights of the Losail circuit in Qatar on Saturday evening.

Desalle stormed to a clear victory in the first MX1 race and then finished second in the new “Superfinal” race – that saw the top MX1 and MX2 riders go head-to-head in a Motocross of Nations-style race – to take the lead in the 18-round series.

Warm conditions and a late evening schedule – the new Superfinal took place at 23.10 local time – were just two of the circumstances Desalle and team-mate Kevin Strijbos had to deal with at Losail for the first of two back-to-back flyaway races.

Desalle was fast in Friday qualifying to earn second place in the gate for Saturday’s sole MX1 moto of 35 minutes and two laps; and the work concentrated on his starting potential paid dividends with two excellent starts: In the first, he dealt with Strijbos who took the holeshot, and then the Belgian stalked the rear wheel of Ken De Dycker, eventually passing his fellow countryman with 10 minutes remaining and defended a comfortable lead to the flag. Afterwards, he lined-up in the new Superfinal and to see both Desalle and Strijbos heading the 40-strong pack around the first corner showed the fiery performance of the 2013 RM-Z450 Suzuki from a standing start. Desalle again led the way but could do little about defending champion Antonio Cairoli on this occasion and concentrated on taking the overall win – his first victory since Sweden last year.

Strijbos walked away from his first Grand Prix back on the RM-Z450 content with a pair of sixth position finishes and the kind of pace on the opening lap that will place him in the regular slot of protagonist if he can repeat it. It was confirmation for the Belgian that he still has a lot to offer the team and the MX1 category.

With Desalle’s machine sporting the red number plate as series leader, the Rockstar Energy Suzuki crew quickly crated its machinery and equipment in preparation for freight to Pattaya and the maiden Grand Prix of Thailand next week.

Clement Desalle:

“It is a good feeling to start the season with the red plate but it doesn’t mean so much because the year is very long. I have always said that when I have fun on my bike, then the results go well and that’s really important. I didn’t make many mistakes today and my starts were much better than we saw in the pre-season races; that was a good point. I had some difficult moments last season and also coming back from some injuries, but I feel good on the bike now and wasn’t pushing too hard. I want to say a big thanks to my team because they made a big job in the last few weeks. It was tough to start the championship a month earlier than usual.”

Kevin Strijbos:

“I can be happy to start with sixth. I got a holeshot in the first race and led for the first six laps and Ken de Dycker was pushing me and I was a bit stressed. I made some mistakes and people overtook me but I recovered from that moment to be steady again. I wasn’t too happy with how I rode and I gave myself another chance by getting around the first corner in second place in that next moto. I pushed as hard as I could. I would love to be top-five but it was a solid way to start. I think other people had a worse day than me.”

The eighth round of 16 was washed-out on Saturday through relentless rainfall that softened the circuit and almost flooded the paddock. The qualification heat races were cancelled but Desalle was able to secure his first Pole position of the season through the fastest lap in the chrono. The Belgian was able to feed off the enthusiasm and energy of the vast banks of supporters in attendance and pushed hard for the win in both 35 minute and two-lap motos

Desalle and his peers were quick to acknowledge the quality of the San Souci layout as the climate performed a ‘U-Turn’ on Sunday and sunshine and decent temperatures dried the facility. The terrain was in good shape and offered line choices and generous overtaking opportunities. Desalle made a mistake in the opening stages of the first moto which meant a fierce series of laps to recover from a slot in the top 10 and reach third place. He pushed hard to try and pass Gautier Paulin but was unable to demote the Frenchman. A better launch in the second race allowed Desalle to find his way to the front and he tried to escape the attentions of Antonio Cairoli and Christophe Pourcel. For a quarter of the sprint he gave the public good reason to get noisy but Cairoli was too quick on the day and Desalle centered his attention on making sure of the runner-up slot.

After five podiums from eight events Desalle is second in the MX1 standings and is 47 points behind Cairoli and six in front of Pourcel. Desalle’s team-mate Tanel Leok is 10th and one point from ninth.

The Estonian was quick across the wetter and greasy surface on Saturday but was again handicapped by his starts and first laps on Sunday, especially in the initial outing where he was held up by a crash by other riders on the first turn. Leok pushed hard for ninth and seventh in the two motos aboard his Factory RM-Z450 and ended the day with seventh in the MX1 classification.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 can now down tools for a break after three successive Grand Prix events. FIM Motocross World Championship duty resumes with a trip to Uddevalla in Sweden on July 1st.

Clement Desalle:

“I always try to win the Grand Prix so for that I’m a little disappointed but it was good to get a result at this place. The crowd was great to me and I don’t think I have ever felt such strong support. Antonio was just a bit too fast for us today but I tried my best. I have to say big congratulations to the organisers because they had bad luck with the weather but they did great work on the track and there were more places for overtaking and some nice lines.”

Tanel Leok:

“My riding was good today so I am happy for that. I didn’t have the best start in the first moto and then just couldn’t avoid the guys that had fallen in front of me in the first corner. I was just stuck there as everybody else took off. To come back to ninth from back there was pretty decent. In the second race I started OK but wasn’t too fast in getting a rhythm going. I then lost a bit of time behind Davide Guarneri. Once I got through I had a small crash and that cost me. They did a good job with the track but it wasn’t that easy to pass in places because the lines were the same speed.”

For Team Rockstar Energy Drinks/OTSFF/Motovan/Yamaha Canada’s MX1 veteran Bobby Kiniry and Richard Grey – making his MX2 Nationals debut for the team – it was a promising start to the season, in what was an afternoon of survival of the fittest.
Despite a less than promising start in the first MX2 moto, which saw Grey run around 30th place after one lap, he went full throttle on his potent YZ250F to make his way into the top five within a few laps. He installed himself in fourth place before the halfway mark and ran there the rest of the moto.
His super effort, however, went unrewarded	when	a	rock destroyed his rear tire halfway through the last lap, effectively locking the wheel in place and forcing a frustrated Grey to park his bike.
“I wanted to push the bike to the finish line because I didn’t want to start off the season with a first moto DNF, but with the mud and all, and the tire destroyed, it was impossible,” said Grey. “It would have been a waste of energy, anyway, because I wouldn’t have scored any points and I wanted to be fresh for the second moto.”
In the second moto, Grey, bent on setting the record straight, pulled a top-five start from the very inside (30th gate pick), and worked his way up to third, only to suffer a slide-out on the slippery track about three-quarters of the way through the moto and drop back to eighth.
1
He then worked his way back up to fifth, but he went down in The Wasteland’s mud one more time on the last lap. Not one to throw in the towel, Grey dragged himself and his bike out of the slime and managed to still snare a tenth place at the finish line. He finished 16th overall on the day despite his first moto DNF
“Richard performed beyond expectations today and his results do not come close to showing how well he rode. I think he served notice to the established MX2 riders that he will be a rider to keep an eye on this season,” said team manager Iain Hayden.
Meanwhile, Kiniry came to a cloudy and rainy Nanaimo with a black cloud accompanying him from his home in the USA. His travel bag had been lost in transit by the airline, containing all his gear and parts needed for a competitive weekend. Thanks to Jim at Pro Circuit, who managed to get some parts and gear to the team at
the last minute, Kiniry started the first moto as if it was business as usual.
He grabbed a top-five start, which he quickly parlayed into third place, where he settled into a comfortable pace to ride unchallenged to the finish line.
In the second moto, Kiniry hammered down a second place start on his YZ450F but a slip and slide on lap three saw him lose one position. As in the first moto, he settled into third place and kept the rest of the freight train behind him till the checkered flag, finishing third overall on the day.
“It was an interesting way to start the season, to say the least. No gear, no spare parts, and dismal weather. But you gotta look past that and do the job you’re supposed to do and that’s race for the win,” said Kiniry. “I didn’t quite get there but with two third place finishes I managed to start the season on a positive note. And it was only one round out of nine. I think we did okay.”

The fourth round of 16 in the FIM Motocross World Championship was played out in 30 degree temperatures and across a track that was tricky through the mixture of loose terrain and hard-pack. Some 25,000 spectators turned out at the Nico España circuit and were able to see Desalle engage in two fantastic MX1 motos where he fought repeatedly for the lead and was denied the top step of the podium by just one point.

Desalle and team-mate Tanel Leok were both initially skeptical of the racing surface on Saturday and the dusty conditions and both decided to abstain from competing in the Qualification heat, which meant they entered the gate 14th and 18th respectively. The track was extensively watered throughout Saturday night and also Sunday morning and was a rough and gnarly prospect for the two 35 minute and two lap motos.

The Belgian made an excellent start in the first outing and was part of a riveting chase to the checkered flag with Antonio Cairoli and Christophe Pourcel. When the latter caught fencing in his rear wheel it was down to the reigning Champion and the ‘25′ Suzuki; and the Italian had just a little too much for Desalle on this occasion. The same trio resumed battle in the second moto but were joined by David Philippaerts. Desalle and the former Champion had a gripping duel with several close overtaking moves for the lead. Although Philippaerts was able to break away on the final lap, Desalle lost the overall victory when Cairoli moved past Pourcel and his ranking of 1-3 pipped the Suzuki man’s 2-2 scorecard.

Leok was visually faster and more confident on the RM-Z450 after recovering further from his injured left ankle. The Estonian had a poor start in the first moto but flew back to sixth place and was unlucky not to demote Kevin Strijbos in the closing stages. A better launch in the second affair led to another sixth position and fifth spot overall; his best result yet in ‘yellow’.

The events of the Mexican event mean that in the MX1 World Championship standings Desalle is second and 29 points behind Cairoli while Leok is ninth. Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 will now crate up the works RM-Z450s and prepare for shipping to Beto Carrero for the Grand Prix of Brazil next week.

Clement Desalle:

“Second again! I’m being consistent which is good but I was close to the win today so it was disappointing not to do it. I will keep working and be positive. The second moto was a good battle with David. We are two of the most aggressive riders and when you can race hard like that without crashing then it can be good.”

Tanel Leok:

“It went alright today. My riding keeps getting better and better as my leg improves. I can be more aggressive and when there is no pain then you don’t need to worry. My start was not so good in the first moto but I was riding OK and catching up. My roll-offs finished just before the end and I wasn’t able to catch Strijbos for fifth. My start was better in the second moto and I was happy with that. My speed is now good from the beginning of the races. I struggled a little bit to pass Boog but got him by the end. The track was good but the dust was the only problem.”
