WORLD MINI GRAND PRIX 2011 RACE REPORT

The World Mini Grand Prix was held at Mesquite MX about 90 miles east of the Las Vegas airport for the second consecutive year. Having raced this national when it was at the speedway, I was very excited to see the new facility last year after the move. I was truly and absolutely not a fan of the old one. This coming from a guy that likes every track and just loves riding dirt bikes. Maybe it was the time I wadded up in 3 first corner pile ups, or perhaps it was just the fact that it was windy every day. The wind would be mellow early in the morning, giving a false hope of better conditions. Then it would gain speed the higher the sun moved up in the sky. The new track is protected in a Valley with Mountains in the the background. You also have to drive literally through a golf course to get down the hill to the track. As alluring as that may be, I’m pretty sure the club swingers would have a pretty good idea where the dirt motorbicycles would come from if they happened to sneak onto the lush greens. Thusly I would recommend not giving into the temptation if we want the World Mini to continue at this site. Now about that wind. It is certainly no where near as windy out there……well except for the first day of racing. The wind was whipping and reaching speeds of 65 miles per hour I believe. Coupled with the dust in the desert, we had ourselves an old fashion dust storm at times. When you were lucky enough to see the dust coming, the best thing to do was turn your back and endure the sting. It felt as if I was on the inside of a sandblaster, the only difference? I did NOT come out shiny. I was as brown as a brown cow and then so was my hotel shower. If I didn’t have a set of Dragon Goggles to wear as I walked around, I most certainly would have had a miserable day. Thanks Kenny. Aside from that one day, everything is better in Mesquite if you ask me.

Spring Classic Amateur MX National at Mill Creek Race Report

For 2011 the Thor Spring Classic Amateur National moved from it’s former location at Lake Whitney MX to a completely different site in Alabama. Now at Mill Creek MX run by Alan McWilliams, the track flows up and down the clay hillsides with an awesome layout. The track is really pretty fast, but all the jumps have very forgiving landings even though some of them are pretty big. The tracked looked really fun all around. One thing that was very uncooperative early in the week however was the weather. The entire state was experiencing torrential downpours and flash flooding early in the week. McWilliams whole crew though are no strangers to adverse conditions, having seen them pull tracks together for the past couple years at Lake Whitney. The worst part for me was missing a day of racing before I had to leave for Indianapolis Supercross. This also left me with not very many photos for this race report hehe, dangit. During the day where no racing took place, Jeff Cernic, “Jersey” Jo Dacosta and I went and checked out the Barber Motorcycle Museum. If you ever get a chance to go there, do so. More motorcycles than I could ever imagine being in one place. To the point where I believe there to be billions of dollars in inventory on site. Before I conclude this intro, I would like to wish all our riders the best of luck in this, the second consecutive week of major amateur races at Oak Hill in Texas this week!

The entire Rockstar Squad was able to amass 7 titles, 18 podiums, 27 top fives and 35 top tens!

Xtreme Rockstar Suzuki’s Jeremy Martin is on the gas, period! He’s not just riding very fast however, his line choices are incredible as well as his consistency. You cannot possibly be any more solid than he was at Mill Creek. Not only did Jeremy sweep all four B classes, he did so by winning every moto. Eight first place moto finishes, leading to four national titles. I don’t know the exact history on this but I’m sure it has not been done very many times. Look for the younger brother of pro rider Alex Martin to do more of the same this week.

Also riding out of the Xtreme Rockstar Suzuki Semi is Justin Summers. New to the team this year, Justin too is a top contender in the B class. Picking up two 2nd and two 4th place overall finishes during the week. Really, Summers was bested only in total finishes by his teammate. He is part of an all star line-up we have this year in the intermediate B classes, thought by many to be the fastest, most competitive group on the track.

Our lone A rider Landon Currier, also riding for Xtreme, started out the week in a tough way in his first moto. He was getting roosted by mud so bad, he pulled his goggles off on the first lap. Not being one to give up however he trudged on. Landon had so much mud in his eyes when he came off it was scary! He was able to pick it up through the week though with some top 5 moto finishes and a 4th overall in 450 A.

Rockstar Suzuki’s youngster Michael Mosiman was able to win a moto just before I left after fighting tooth and nail to do so. It was the best battle I saw in my time there…….although I only saw 12 motos.

Joey Crown is on the Rockstar Suzuki Development Team but is really proving his worth in his first two nationals aboard an 85. Making the jump at Mini O’s, Joey was able to win a title on the bigger bikes. He was still riding 65’s then and is now full time on the 85’s. Joey’s style really impresses me and his Dad informed me that he has always put emphasis on that. Little Crown reminds me a lot of Nick Paluzzi on the track, who was one of our top guys for a long time and has since moved on to Supercross where has had some success.

Something new this year in the amateur ranks for us is the addition of girls to the team. This is very exciting cause now we have Jennifer Burton who is one of the best. Jennifer has been out with a knee injury so this was her first big national on a new bike and a new team. However she still was able to pick up a title in the Women’s 14+ Class!

Alexander Frye had a good week aboard his RM 85’s with a title in Jr. Mini (9-13), then backed it up with another 2nd place overall in 85 (12-13) Mod.

Jace Owen is the 4th and final rider for Xtreme Rockstar Suzuki. Jace became a full time big bike rider this year and is contending both Schoolboy classes. Owen has been able to wrap up a title at each national thus far starting at Mini O’s

Rockstar Suzuki Rider Joey Savatgy completes the dominance we have in the 250 B classes. Joey just came up short to Martin in Alabama with two 2nd place finishes but you can bet he will certainly be gunning for the top of the box at Oak Hill.

Kylie Fasnacht also a member of the new development team was able to secure a couple top five finishes. Kylie was taken out of Mini O’s with an injury so this is her first race back.

Jordan Bailey is another rider who made the big jump from 65’s to 85’s full time at Mill Creek. Jordan was able to record a podium, top five and top ten.

I’m sure Jordon expected to do better than he did at Mill Creek but he was able to pick up a podium spot in Supermini 2. Pretty certain Smith will pick it up this week!

The new development team also opened a spot for Bryan Johnson to vie for 25+ titles. The new team rider was able to finish 2nd overall at Mill Creek.

2010 Winter National Olympics Race Report

Just got home from the 2010 Mini O’s in Gainesville, FL. This race is particularly special as it is held each and every year on the week of Thanksgiving. It is also different from other major amateur nationals because of the format. Racers first compete on a technical supercross track the beginning half of the week, then a challenging motocross track the latter half. Then in the end, results are combined from the two disciplines to decide who is the Olympiad Overall Champion in each class. On Thanksgiving Thursday, racing stops a little bit early to allow everyone to get all cleaned up for the Thor Dinner which everyone is invited to attend. Industry Managers from several competing companies stand side by side to serve the hungry motoheads who line up in the hundreds. I was fortunate enough to receive a promotion this year from the green bean serving of the past few years, to the uppermost echelon of Thor Thanksgiving Servers……”The Turkey Man”! Vurbmoto also stopped by to mic me up and bring out my innermost Rachael Ray. Now on to the racing! Just a preview, Rockstar riders were able to rack up (58) Top Tens, (38) Top Fives, (32) Podiums and (15) Titles!

Mini O’s was not only Joey Crown’s first major national as a part of the Rockstar Motocross Family but also his first big race on an 85. Joey was clearly already on the pace of the frontrunners and was also able to lock up a title in SX aboard his RM-85. This went really well with his two other titles in the 65 (10-11) Classes.

Also new to the team and the 85 class is Orlando, Florida’s Jordan Bailey. Jordan has also made a smooth transition to the 85 class, and like Crown, he too collected three Mini O’s titles.

Xtreme Rockstar Suzuki’s Jace Owen made a transition of his own as well. Jace joined the crew over at Xtreme and jumped to big bikes full time. The jump up from 85’s is a huge step and sometimes can be difficult. Not for Owen however as he rode very impressive all week and even claimed a title in the Motocross Youth (12-16) Mod Class!

Returning to the Xtreme Rockstar Suzuki squad was Millville Motocross’ Jeremy Martin. Martin is more at home on the MX style track but was able to collect two titles in SX on his way to 3 total.

Rockstar Suzuki’s Joey Savatgy overcame some bad luck on the SX track to take two titles in the motocross portion of the week. Joey is always one of the fastest riders on any track and will be a force to be reckoned with all year long.

Rockstar Suzuki’s Jordon Smith had a successful week in the start of his last year aboard Suzuki’s RM-85. Jordon was able to sweep every moto in SX and MX in the hotly contested 85 (12-13) Modified classes en route to two titles.

Top B rider Justin Summers is a new addition to Xtreme Rockstar Suzuki Team. Always found in or near the front of the pack, I am very happy to have Justin on board. He’s a nice kid but also a great rider. Not only was Summers able to take a title in the Open B stock class, but also pull a holeshot on his RMZ-250 against a field of 450’s!

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Amateur Team Announced!

The Rockstar Suzuki Amateur Motocross team has been a proving ground for tomorrow’s Motocross and Supercross stars, and the 2011 roster certainly reinforces that tradition. Rockstar Suzuki has announced the 18-rider team that will be competing aboard a fleet of championship-winning Suzuki dirt bikes, including the 2011 Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z250.

The team will feature a mixture of new and returning young racers who will compete in a number of classes in the 2011 Amateur series. Two new names that have been added to the Rockstar Suzuki Amateur roster are Jordan Bailey from Orlando, Florida, who will be riding an RM85 in the 9-11 class, and Jennifer Burton, who hails from Gonzales, California and will be riding the RM-Z250 in the Women’s class.

There are eight returning riders to the 2011 Rockstar Suzuki Amateur team: In the 85cc 9-11 class, Sean Cantrell, from Newbury Park, California, will power his RM85 to the front of the pack alongside Michael Mosiman from Sebastopol, California. The 85cc 12-14 class will be packed with talent, with four Rockstar Suzuki riders battling for titles, including Tristan Miller (Alpine, California), Alexander Frye (Huntingtown, Maryland), Rookie White (Winchester, California) and Jordon Smith (Belmont, North Carolina). Competing aboard the Suzuki RM-Z250, Steven Gretchen, from McMechen, West Virginia, will be racing in the 250B class alongside teammate Joey Savatgy from Cairo, Georgia.

“With the longtime partners we have in Rockstar Energy Drink and our entire list of leading industry sponsors, American Suzuki Motor Corporation is again going to field a very competitive amateur motocross team in 2011,” said Suzuki’s Motocross Support Specialist, Brian Noah. “I am very much looking forward to the gate dropping at the Mini O’s next week, where our team of riders will be showcasing the new RM and RM-Z models. We’re quite proud in that each and every rider on the team is a great representative for Suzuki and I hope to continue working with each of them through their entire racing careers.”
