PALA, CA (September 11, 2011) – Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki finished off the season strong at the 12th and final round of the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championship held in Pala, CA on Saturday. 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Champion Ryan Dungey and teammate Brett Metcalfe powered their Yoshimura-equipped Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450s to a first- and fourth-place finish overall, respectively.

In the first moto, Dungey got pushed out a bit on the start and had to work his way up from 10th at the first lap. He quickly worked his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 up to third by lap six and pushed hard until the end, passing for second on the 13th lap, and ended up crossing the line in second. After another tough start in moto two, Dungey again worked his way up to third by the halfway point. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider put his head down and used the awesome power of his RM-Z to chase down the leader and make the pass in the closing stages to take the checkers for the moto win and the overall win for the day. The 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Champion finished off the season a close second to the top in championship points, amassing a total of six moto wins, 16 podiums and four overall wins.

“It was a good day here at Pala,” said Dungey. “I was able to go two-one for the overall win today on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and that was good. I had a tough start in the first moto and finished second, but we were able to battle back and manage to get through the pack in the second to take the win and get the first overall. It was a tough battle – It was really cool that the championship came down to this last race. Although we didn’t win, we did a great job getting through the season despite all the adversity we had to overcome. I’m really happy with the way my Rockstar Makita Suzuki team stepped up. It’s nice to be able to walk away knowing we did everything we could. It was a lot of fun and there are a lot of great memories. I want to thank the man above, my whole team and crew, my family, all the fans, and everybody in Japan that makes this happen. I’m really looking forward to Motocross Des Nations next week. It’s great to go there and represent your country. It’s really something special.”

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Metcalfe also put on an impressive performance aboard his Yoshimura-equipped Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 this weekend. After a solid start in the first moto, Metcalfe ran as high as third and consistently in fourth before a stall on the last lap dropped him back for a fifth-place finish. Another strong start in moto two put Metcalfe and his Suzuki RM-Z into the front pack. He rode a strong and consistent race once again for another fifth-place moto finish and a fourth overall for the day. Metcalfe finished off the year a solid fourth in championship points and scored an overall win, as well as two podiums and three top five finishes.

“Pala worked out pretty good for me,” said Metcalfe. “I was able to pull off a fourth overall and I’m pretty happy with that. I was really looking forward to Pala because it’s kind of my home race and I had a lot of friends and family here. I started out pretty strong in practice and I was really comfortable out there, which is the important thing. My Suzuki was working really well and I got into a good rhythm. I got two really good starts today and my Suzuki RM-Z450 was really fast getting down to the first corner. I rode well but could only manage two fifths for the day; in the first moto, I should have been fourth, but I stalled it on the last lap. It was a good day and now I’m looking forward to Des Nations. I want to thank my whole Rockstar Makita team, Yoshimura, and all my sponsors. They’ve all been very supportive the entire year. I also want to thank Suzuki for giving us such a great bike in the RM-Z and the support we need to race at this top level.”

The Rockstar Makita Suzuki riders are heading to France next week to compete for their respective countries at the 2011 Motocross Des Nations, which will be held September 17th-18th in Saint Jean d’Angely, France. Metcalfe will also be competing in the 2011 Monster Energy Cup to be held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, October 15th.

X Sports Pro Racing and Alli, the Alliance of Action Sports, present the Rockstar Energy Steel City Highlight Video, from Saturday’s Steel City Motocross National. The 11th round of the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship from Steel City Raceway featured an incredible day of action, including the crowning of the sport’s newest title holder.

Throughout the 2011 season, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson has been the most consistent rider in American Motocross. The sophomore competitor boasts the highest point total in the series, and has the best average finish of any rider. Just two rounds ago, Wilson broke through for his long overdue first victory of the summer at Unadilla. Following a similarly-dominant effort last Saturday, Wilson secured his second win in three rounds, clinching the 250 Class Championship with one round remaining, and ending a two-year drought for Mitch Payton’s Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team.

Click here to view the embedded video.

In the 450 Class, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto inched closer to his first premier-class title, following an impressive 1-1 effort, although it wasn’t without some excitement. Following arguably the most competitive moto of the 2011 season, Villopoto made one of the most dramatic passes of all time on his championship rival Ryan Dungey, squeezing by the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider in the final corner to steal the Moto 1 win. The last-second triumph set the tone for the rest of Villopoto’s day, and now gives him a double-digit advantage heading into the season finale.

In the WMX Class, DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson grabbed her division-leading fourth win of the season, decreasing the points lead held by American Honda’s Ashley Fiolek to 22 points with one round remaining.

Series Statistical Report

Steel City Motocross National
Steel City Raceway – Delmont, Pa. – September 3

Steel City Raceway is the second of two rounds held in the state of Pennsylvania.
The renowned facility has hosted an AMA Pro Motocross event since 1989. It has taken place on Labor Day Weekend since 1993.
Steel City Raceway is one of the most picturesque tracks on the circuit, and features one of the most technically challenging layouts of the 12 national events.
Brett Metcalfe became the 60th different 450 Class winner in AMA Pro Motocross history. Ironically, Metcalfe has never won a moto in his career.
Metcalfe is the ninth international winner in the 450 Class, and just the second from Australia.
Eight points separate Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey atop the 450 Class standings.
Ryan Dungey’s improvement of 32 positions in the second 450 Class moto from Southwick was the most of any rider in 2011.
With a runner-up finish at Southwick, Villopoto has finished on the podium in 11 of his 12 career starts.
Villopoto is the only rider in either class to finish on the overall podium at each round this season.
Justin Barcia’s first moto wins in both the 250 Class and 450 Class have come at Southwick.
250 Class points leader Dean Wilson has finish second overall in six of 10 rounds this season.
Wilson has the most points of any rider in the series across both classes, despite having the least amount of wins in either division. He also boasts the best finishing average in the series.
Blake Baggett boast a series-leading eight moto wins and five overall victories this season.
After winning the first 18 motos of the season, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s winning streak was broken at Southwick, when Gareth Swanepoel garnered his first career moto win for DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha. However, Pro Circuit has still won the overall at all 10 rounds.

450 Class Stats

The first 450 Class race held at Steel City Raceway was September 4, 1994. Mike LaRocco won on a Kawasaki.
This will be the 18th time the gate will drop for a 450 Class race at Steel City Raceway.
Ricky Carmichael, Kevin Windham, Jeff Emig and James Stewart have won at Steel City Raceway in both classes. Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey will look to join that group.
Ricky Carmichael won five consecutive races at Steel City Raceway from 2002 to 2006.
From 1989-1993, Steel City Raceway hosted the 500cc National Championship. Kawasaki won all five races, with Jeff Ward winning four of them from 1989-1992.
Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda have all swept Steel City Raceway in both the 450 and 250 classes twice.
Kawasaki is the winningest manufacturer at Steel City Raceway, boasting six victories.
Only Grant Langston and Tommy Hahn have captured their first-career wins at Steel City Raceway.
Kevin Windham’s win at Steel City Raceway last season came nine seasons after his inaugural victory at the track in 2001. He was the first repeat winner at the track since Ricky Carmichael.
Additionally, the Women’s Motocross Cup will be presented to the rider and team that captured the WMX Class title.

MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli, the Alliance of Action Sports, present the Rockstar Energy Washougal Highlight Video from Saturday’s Peterson CAT Washougal National. The eighth round of the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship from Washougal MX Park featured an incredible day of action, as well as a shakeup in the 450 Class championship.

Coming into Washougal with three consecutive overall victories at the facility since 2008, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey not only looked to maintain his dominance in the Pacific Northwest, but also build on some championship momentum on the heels of an impressive victory the week prior. Washington native, and Monster Energy Kawasaki rider, Ryan Villopoto looked to challenge Dungey and claim an inaugural win at his hometown track. After a win in the opening moto, Villopoto looked to be in position to accomplish that goal, however, Dungey fought back to win Moto 2 and tie his rival in points on the day. By virtue of the second-moto tiebreaker, Dungey took the overall. The duo’s strong outing vaulted both riders ahead of TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed in the standings, resulting in just a nine-point deficit between the three riders.

In the 250 Class, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki remained undefeated in 2011, through eight rounds of competition. Blake Baggett was able to secure his series-leading fifth win of the summer, but not without a strong challenge from teammate Tyla Rattray, who battled until the finish in his quest for the overall.
