When the Supercross series kicks off in Anaheim each year there is pressure on everybody. Seasoned riders, rookies and even everyone in the industry. All are so ready for the SX season to start after spending the previous couple months assembling teams, writing contracts, testing, photo shoots, video shoots etc. Angel Stadium is also so close to all the corporate offices of major team sponsors. So while there is a lot expectation for riders to start the season off on top, industry regulars are scrambling the entire week prior and day of the race to tie up all loose ends under the scrutinizing eyes of there bosses and company owners. Phoenix is a complete flip flop. When the series moves to the red clay of Arizona, the pressure shifts almost entirely to the riders. The guys who did good at A1 want nothing more then to back up their performance. The guys who did not do so well are aiming to redeem themselves. The race action in Phoenix certainly did not disappoint and the red plate remained in the clutches of Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps.
Davi Millsaps opened a lot, if not all outside eyes with his very impressive victory in the season opener. So many people wanted to interview Davi during the week in between rounds 1 and 2, one could certainly wonder how he had time to sleep. The question still remained, could Millsaps back it up. Anything in the top five would do just that. It’s going to be a long 17 race season and consistency has been proven to pay off in the past so that is the goal. Throughout the day in practice DM18 was not as comfortable as he was the previous week in California. As the gate dropped for his heat race he put the days events behind him and finished a solid second, giving him a good gate pick going into the main. As the group exited turn one in the main event Millsaps missed getting the holeshot by a mere few inches. It most certainly helps to start near the front with the level of competition in the 2013 450 class. Davi fought hard all 20 laps, never giving up. Battling all the way through. As the race neared it’s completion, he slipped just off the podium into fourth. Then he got a little help as Trey Canard went down on the last lap. Fortunately Trey got up uninjured. Davi kept it on two wheels, put himself in position and wound up on the podium. If you can have a bit of a rough day and still get third, You’re gonna be in it every week and the long run for the title hunt. Millsaps carries the red plate and a six point lead as the series moves back to Anaheim where he rode so well one week ago.
Davi Millsaps: “For how bad the day was, coming out and establishing a third was good.If I can make these days my worst and my best days last weekend, I’ll be good.”
Ryan Sipes is going to finish on the podium, and he’s going to do so very soon. He without a doubt has the speed and desire. Although it doesn’t show on paper, he was very close in Phoenix. Ryan always puts up good times in practice and this week was no different. In his heat race he got a good start and rode to strong 3rd place finish. Sipes did not get off the line as well in the 250 class main event however. You can’t ever count Ryan out though. He started outside the top ten and then quite simply just went to work. Methodically picking off one rider after another. In the waning moments of the 15 lap contest suddenly Ryan was all the way up to the fourth place position! However on the last lap, he came into contact with Cole Seely which stalled his momentum going into a rhythm section allowing two more riders to move past him. As the checkers waived, he cross the finish in 7th. The ingredients are there though and Sipes will unquestionably be extremely hungry going into round 3. He currently sits fourth in points.
Ryan Sipes: “Sort of a bummer, but I can’t be bummed cause I felt like rode good. Working my way up and passing guys and I got [Cole] Seely for fourth with two laps to go. I felt like I needed to guard my line and that let him come up and get close. Then we hit in the corner and I was forced to case the double and get passed by a couple more guys. So I went from fourth to seventh in a two straights. But like I said, I rode good and all we can do is come in ready for next weekend.”
After a very successful round 1 Jason Anderson ran into some troubles in round 2. It wasn’t for a lack of effort though. Jason looked great all day in practice and was poised for another impressive evening. His heat race was where his complications arose. As the pack was rounding turn one, Anderson was hit hard by another rider to the inside of him. Jason was slammed to the right, where he tangled with a couple more riders. He was ejected from his bike luckily landing on a tough block as opposed to the concrete-like soil off the track. He remounted and did everything he could but was just too far behind to make it into qualifying position in the short 6 lap heat race. Jason was headed to the LCQ. Not a comfortable place for a top rider to be and for good reason. Anything can happen. Anderson looked to be comfortably on his way to making it into the main until a mistake put him back on the hard ground. He just clipped the landing of the last triple at the end of the longest rhythm section thus far this year ending his night. The good news is that Jason left Arizona 100% healthy and is eager to get back on the line for round 3.
Jason Anderson: “Rough weekend, had a crash in the heat, then I wound up endoing in the LCQ all by myself. So not a good night. For sure we’ll improve on that next week and hopefully be on the box.”
